Open Concept Summer

Today is the last day of school for my three.  While the boys are at the beach on one last field trip, the littlest one is hanging on tightly to her much beloved teacher.  Her last official day as a “Seedling” will be spent playing outdoors and making an ice cream sundae.  Not a terrible way to wrap up another amazing Montessori year of learning.

Last summer the kids went to camp for over half of their holiday break.  Originally scheduled for only three sessions, as each ended there was another request to sign on for “just one more.”  When they are attending a camp situated on a farm and nature being the main theme weaved throughout their days, how can you say no?  Yes, the days were long and the kids were exhausted but they came home thrilled to be dirty and tired from a full day of exploring.

This year, when it came time to look over the themes, I told them only four weeks were an option so make sure to choose carefully.  My intention for this restriction is to keep the summer open for opportunities and plenty of spontaneous activities.  As much as I enjoy and need a schedule with three kids at home, I like knowing we can have time together with nothing but our imaginations deciding the day for us.

There are plans for trips to a local temple, nature walks, swimming, camping in the back yard, catching fireflies, making camp fires, day trips to the city, visits to a few local museums and art exhibits, whatever we happen to be open to on any given day.  Creating an open concept summer is how I want to play with my kids this year, because before you know it, they grow older and their summer days look decidedly differently than today.  Friends will replace parents on outings and adventures, while I sit back, take a deep breath and let it happen.  I’m comfortable with growth and change, in fact I have learned to embrace it with an open heart.  But this summer, they are still mine and I will savor the weeks ahead with them by my side.

Right now I have plenty of creative work on my own calendar for the upcoming months to keep me happy and fulfilled.  With a few writing assignments and book proposals in the works and more creative projects waiting in the wings, those camp days will be full for me too.  I look to those days alone as time to recharge and relax into what it is I like to do.  Sit back and breath in the warm air and feel the sun on my skin.  Oh summer, we are going to get along well this year, I can feel it!

This space will still be here, alive but quiet until the end of summer when I return and share all the good that is on the horizon.  So much good I’m bursting!  In the meantime, you can stay connected and take a peek at where I am and what I’m doing over on Instagram, FacebookTwitter and Pinterest.  You can also sign up for my RSS feed to get notified of my return here in a few weeks.

Savor the long days ahead and make sure you turn up toward the night sky now and then, close your eyes and make that wish.  Go ahead, I’m right there with you…

Until then…

The Weekender

How is your weekend going so far?  Mine?  Funny you should ask.  I would have to say my heart is bursting, just like all the flowering trees around here.  The cycle of life is incredible and applies to everything, not just plants and trees.  So many moments or memories in our lives, both big and small, eventually resurface, just like those buds.  Watching all the change happening outside has me reflecting on how much I cherish my past and my own memories.  Even though my life has changed greatly over the years and some of those important people are no longer part of my days, their memories are never truly gone.  And for that, I am grateful.

On a bit of a lighter note, I will be hanging around the house this weekend, reading, gardening, writing, visiting with my own mother and eating dinner out with family on Sunday.  Not having to clean up dishes sounds like a perfect Mother’s Day to me!  I’m looking forward to lots of cuddle time with my babies too, and grateful for those little arms wrapping around me because without them, I wouldn’t be celebrating this holiday for the 11th time!

Oh, and we will be squeezing in a verse or two of Happy Birthday to Mark as his day happens to fall on Sunday this year.  Don’t worry, the kids are making sure his birthday isn’t forgotten.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I will see you back here next week.

Until then…

Fare un picnic

Out of the blue last Friday morning, the desire to eat al fresco struck me hard!  There was still a chill in the air at 9am but the blue sky and warm sun was promising.  The boys had an early dismissal from school and I turned to Claire and said, “Let’s pack up a picnic and we will eat lunch at the park after we get the boys!”  No complaints from her!

When we arrived at school I didn’t say anything and they didn’t notice the large overstuffed green picnic bag on the front seat.  Claire sort of spilled the surprise, but Jake didn’t quite understand what she was talking about so he never questioned it further.

In fact, they didn’t notice we were NOT going home until we drove down the road to the park.  Happy, happy kids!

Click to see the rest of our afternoon!

My Girl

May 1, 2013

My sweet baby, Claire Rowan, celebrated three years of happiness this past Friday.  Full of questions, interests and a love of the outdoors, to say she is content and feels loved is an understatement.  Sweet, smart, strong willed, intentional, quick-witted, hilariously funny, a fast thinker, generous to all and knows how to turn on her charm [...]

It is Spring here and with this season comes more soccer than usual for my two oldest boys, Jake and Mark.  Yes, I do consider Mark my fourth child, but let’s leave that for another time.  Claire, not wanting to be left out of anything her siblings do, is ready and willing to cheer on [...]

Eat Well ~ Hot Cross Buns

April 18, 2013

Jake is currently studying religion in school and had been assigned to select two specific faiths for study, research and reports.  Catholicism and Buddhism were his choices and he has been researching, reading and writing about them for a few weeks now.  Thinking I would be of some help with his projects as I was [...]

Mindful Monday ~ Watch Your Mouth!

April 8, 2013

mindfulness ~ the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something Do you ever find yourself saying something cringe-worthy to your child only to have immediate regret?  It has been happening more often for me lately and I’m not sure why.  Too much work to do and not enough time for my creative [...]
