Silhouette art is such a fantastic craft because it works well with any type of decor. Right now I’m really into “utilitarian” silhouette art. I love it because it’s a little quirky but the silhouetted objects are familiar enough not to be too crazy-looking.
Lately I’ve been experimenting with different ways to create silhouette art and I’ve discovered it is a great craft for kids! Today I’m sharing with you how your older children can create their very own artwork using objects such as kitchen utensils.
Best for Ages 6 and older
Picture frames (also optional)
Here’s How:
Step 1: Have your child lay out some kitchen utensils or other objects on some plain white paper on a table. Using a digital camera, take pictures of each kitchen utensil one by one.
Step 2: Once you have taken all of your pictures, upload them onto the computer and print them out. Choose the option that allows you to print the image onto the full page.
Step 3: *Parents will need to help younger children with this part. Using good scissors, cut out around each object and then set each cut-out aside.
Step 4: Next, lay each of your silhouettes on top of paper or newspaper to protect your work surface and color each of your silhouettes with the black marker. When finished, set aside to dry.
Step 5: Glue your silhouettes onto paper creating any design you please. We used acrylic frames that had a cardboard backing and experimented gluing them directly onto the white cardboard backing. They looked so great we left them and framed them that way!
Step 1: Print out your object onto colored paper. We used hot pink.
Step 2: Cut out the silhouette from the colored paper.
Step 3: Flip the cut-out over so you don’t see the printer ink and glue onto a complimentary or contrasting background color.
Step 4: Frame and hang!
Thanks Caroline!
I’ve always been a big fan of hanging artwork in a kitchen. But throw in a utilitarian spin and I’m sold!
