Make: Date Night Bow Brooch

For eons now, I’ve been wanting to make this flirty and adorable little felt bow. I’ve seen it turned into a barrette (which would be really great too) but I wanted to make a brooch.  That way, I could wear it on my favorite sweater or use it as a punch of playful color with a special dress.
Since I’m busy with kids afoot during the day, DIY and craft projects that don’t involve the children have to be both simple and non-time consuming. This project fits the bill for both of those criteria! You will love that this bow takes less than 10 minutes to craft. So afterwards, you’ll have plenty of time to call a babysitter (if need be) and arrange your date night!

You Will Need:
Red Felt
Card Stock paper or (Pro Tip: you can use paint chip samples to match your felt exactly)
Sewing Scissors
Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
Brooch Pin

Step 1:

Begin by cutting the red felt into these three pieces:

One 2.5″ long by 3/4″ wide strip

One 4.5″ long by 3/4″ wide strip

One 3.5″ long by 3/4″ wide strip (after cutting the length then cut a “v” in each end of this strip

Arrange your pieces on your work surface so you can see what you are working with.

Step 2:
Work first with your 4.5″ long strip of felt and loop the ends underneath on each side.

Step 3:
Once you have looped the ends underneath on both sides to form the “bow” of your bow, affix together with a very small dab of hot glue.

Step 4:
Slip your “V” ended ribbon underneath and, again using a small amount of glue, glue the looped end “bow” on top of the “v” ended ribbon strip.

Step 5:
Next take your 3.5″ length strip and loop it around the center of the bow. Affix with a dab of glue.

Step 6:
To make sturdy the area where you will be gluing the brooch, you will need to cut a thin, rectangular strip of your card stock paper. Glue the card stock paper to the underneath of the bow.

Step 7:
Lastly, glue your brooch pin to the card stock paper and you are finished!

Now, go get ready for your date night and have fun!

Thanks, Caroline for adding a little bit of color to our day today.

Caroline also suggested this would be a great DIY project for those heading to Altitude Design Summit next week.  If you’re looking for an extra touch to add to an outfit just “put a bow on it!”

Live Well
